Field Marshal Sir Alured Clarke (1744-1832), commander of the British army in Georgia (1780), Governor of Jamaica (1784), Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Army (1796), acting Governor-General of India (1798) and finally Commander-in-Chief of India (also 1798). He was promoted to field marshal on the occasion of the coronation of King William IV on 22 July 1830. In 1770 Clarke married Elizabeth Catherine (Kitty) Hunter, who had eloped with the married Earl of Pembroke eight years earlier.
