Mort du Prince Louis de Prusse, Au Combat de Saalfed, Le 10 Octobre 1806.
Hand coloured engraving. Sheet size: 305 x 465mm (12 x 18¼"). Trimmed inside plate at top and bottom.
The battle of Saalfeld was the first major clash during the War of the Fourth Coalition, including Prussia, Russia, Saxony, Sweden, and Great Britain, and saw a French column defeat a smaller Prussian force under Prince Louis Ferdinand. Prince Louis decided to lead five squadrons into battle, and with the French cavalry responding, he was wounded, but refused to surrender, and was killed in single combat by Quartermaster Guindet of the 10th Hussars, under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte.
