London, Published August 10. 1801, by John Jeffryes, Clapham Road.
Mezzotint with scratch letter title, very scarce. Sheet 655 x 550mm (25¾ x 21½"). Trimmed into plate on three sides, edges scuffed and nicked: a battered example of a superb image.
An equestrian portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul, sword in hand and white horse rearing. This example is a state undescribed by Whitman, between his states I & II. The third and final state has Napoleon's face replaced with that of Alexander I of Russia.
BM: 2010,7081.5254, this state; Whitman 206, undescribed.
