A woman kneeling in front of a crucifix, with an open bible in front of her. Etching by history painter Charles West Cope (1811-90). From 'Etched Thoughts of the Etching Club', of which Cope was a founding member, and illustrative of a poem by Joseph Hall, Bishop of Norwich. Cope is primarily remembered for his frescoes in the House of Lords and the peers' corridor, but in addition to his academic renderings of historical and literary subjects, he was a talented printmaker.
