Joseph Priestley (1773 - 1804), theologian and natural philosopher. He is chiefly remembered today for isolating and identifying seven gases, including oxygen, but was also a vigorous advocate of unitarianism and liberal reform of government, education, and theology. After living in several British cities, he moved to the United States in 1794 and spent the final decade of his life in Pennsylvania. Engraved after a portrait by John Hazlitt (1767-1837), brother of the celebrated essayist William Hazlitt. John himself worked in the US as a young man, returning to England in 1787.
