Point Colonna, Isle of St. Pietro
Lithograph on india, very rare with large margins; india 145 x 210mm (5¾ x 8¼"). Foxing.
View of the distinctive rock formation of Punta Colonna on the island of San Pietro off the west coast of Sardinia. The printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) probably visited the island when in Sardinia in the 1820s. Whitby was the widow of Cornwallis' flag captain, John Whitby, who died in 1806. Following her husband's death, Whitby spent much of her time with Cornwallis, who left his estate to her on his death in 1819. Whitby was an amateur lithographer who established a private press at Newlands.
