Tunny Fishery with Cape Passero.Straits of Messina
Lithograph, rare with large margins; printed area 150 x 180mm (6 x 7"). Foxing.
Tuna fishing in the Strait of Messina separating mainland Italy from the island of Sicily, probably seen by the printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) when visiting Italy in the 1820s. Whitby inherited the country seat of Newlands, Hampshire in 1819, on the death of naval officer Sir William Cornwallis, and established a private press there to print lithographs by herself and others.
