'Neptune's Grotto', a stalactite cave near Alghero on the island of Sardinia. Probably seen by the printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) when visiting Italy in the 1820s. Whitby inherited the country seat of Newlands, Hampshire in 1819, on the death of naval officer Sir William Cornwallis, and established a private press there to print lithographs by herself and others.
