Lithograph, rare, watermarked paper; printed area 130 x 135mm (5 x 5¼")
Donkey turning an axle to power a water wheel, probably seen by the printmaker Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) when visiting Sardinia in the 1820s. Whitby inherited the country seat of Newlands, Hampshire in 1819, on the death of naval officer Sir William Cornwallis, and established a private press there to print lithographs by herself and others.
