[Sepulchre of the Plauzia Family and with the Lucano Bridge, near Tivoli]Sepolcro di Plautio
Lithograph, rare; printed area 215 x 300mm (8½ x 11¾").
The ancient bridge, the Ponte Lucano, and circular tomb of the Plauzia family (constructed during the reign of Vespasian), near Tivoli. Probably seen by the printmaker, Mary Anne Theresa Whitby (1784-1850) when visiting Italy in the 1820s. Whitby inherited the country seat of Newlands, Hampshire in 1819, on the death of naval officer Sir William Cornwallis, and established a private press there to print lithographs by herself and others.
