Portrait of General Sir Henry Clinton (1730-1795) dressed in military uniform, within an oval. Clinton was a British army officer and politician, best known for his service as a general during the American War of Independence. His early years in service were in the Seven Years' War and the War of the Austrian Succession. However it was in 1775 when he arrived in Boston and from 1778 to 1782 he was the British Commander-in-Chief in North America. In 1783 he published his 'Narrative of the Campaign of 1781 in North America', in which he attempted to lay the blame for the campaign failures on General Cornwallis.
