A full length portrait of army officer and politician John Campbell (1680-1743), in Highland uniform with his left hand on a grounded sword. Commissioner for negotiating Union with Scotland in 1705, Campbell served with distinction at Ramillies, Oudenard, Malplaquet and other battlefields in the War of the Spanish Succession. He was Master General of the Ordnance from 1725-1740 and was promoted to Field Marshal in 1736. In 1742, a year before his death, he was given the position of Commander in Chief of the British Army.
