Stipple, small margins. Very fine. Alfred Morrison's collectors stamp on verso in black ink. Cabinet Brentano-Birkenstock's collectors stamp on verso in blue ink. Plate: 165 x 230mm, (6½ x 9"). Trimmed.
Portrait of poet John Milton (1608-1674), after a miniature by Samuel Cooper. The portrait is set in a roundel set upon a plinth, carved with his name and scenes from 'Paradise Lost'. Leaning up against the plinth is a roundel on which is transcribed the inscription on the back of the miniature. The inscription discusses the ownership of the miniature after the death of Milton's daughter Deborah. Beneath the image is a description by Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) correcting some of the details in the above inscription.
