Charles Simeon (1759-1836), evangelical churchman, one of the founders of the 'Church Missionary Society' in 1799 and the 'London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews' in 1809. In 1783 he took the ministry of of Holy Trinity Church: at first he was so unpopular that his services were frequently interrupted, but he overcame public prejudice, gaining a remarkable and lasting influence among the undergraduates of the university.
