Joseph Warton (1722-1800), academic and literary critic famed for his editions of Virgil and Dryden. Educated at Winchester College, he returned there to teach in 1755 and was headmaster 1766-1793. His younger brother, Thomas Warton, was poet laureate 1785-1790.
