George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), the prolific German composer who settled in London in 1712. For nearly fifty years he poured out opera, oratorios, concertos and occasional music. His Messiah, composed in 1741 was first performed in Dublin in 1742. It didn't reach its final state, and the most familiar version, until the performance to benefit the Foundling Hospital in 1754. He is buried in Wesminster Abbey.
