A half length portrait of John Bavin, more commonly known as 'College John', standing directed slightly to the left, facing the viewer. A figure in academic dress can be seen on the steps of the collge entrance in the background to the left. Bavin was a porter at St Peter's, Westminster whose responsibilities would have varied from controlling entrance to the college, to maintenance and repairs. The Royal College of St. Peter in Westminster, better known as Westminster School, is one of the original nine British public schools (the so-called 'Clarendon Schools') as defined by the Public Schools Act of 1868.
