George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608 - 1670), military and naval officer. Monck was one of the architects of the Restoration of the monarchy, along with Pepys' patron Edward Montagu. He was an accomplished military commander and served as Joint-Commander-in-Chief with Prince Rupert, in the campaign of 1666 against the Dutch. Plate from Isaac de Larrey's 'Histoire d'Angleterre' (1697-1713) from a design by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722), acclaimed as the most important Dutch Master during his lifetime, although his reputation declined from the late 18th century onwards.
