John Bull Lamenting the sorrows of Poor Uncle Tom.
Lithograph, very scarce, sheet 275 x 255mm (10¾ x 10"). Trimmed in shape of border.
A man in tears as he reads Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (1851). The title indicates this is intended as a British response to slavery, the subject of the novel. Slavery had been abolished in Britain in 1833 but was not formally outlawed in the United States until 1865.
