Coloured etching. 250 x 350mm (9¾ x 13¾"). Watermarked 1810. Date removed from plate, small tear entering inscription area.
A parson chastises an old and ugly woman for drinking gin and smoking rather than attending church, to which she retorts that he should stay in his church. The woman sits by a doorway with 'Rich Cordial Gin' on a sign; inside is a pot still marked 'Old Tom', a variety of gin popular at the time. To the left is the three-balled sign of the pawnbroker, making the common connection between drink and poverty.
