Der Freischutz.Casting the Seventh Bullet. "Seven!!!!!!!"
London, Published by Tho.s McLean, Haymarket & to be had of J.W. Gear, 166 Strand, 1833
Lithograph, 220 x 200mm (8½ x 8").
Spectators viewing Weber's opera 'Der Freischütz' (1821). The legend of the Freischütz involves a deal with the devil in which the marksman obtains six bullets guaranteed whichever target he chooses, but the devil chooses the target of the seventh (hence the trepidation of some of these spectators). J. W. Gear moved to Boston, U.S.A. in midlife.
