A working volvelle (moving dial) allowing the calculation of local time around the world. On the base are 26 place names, with Britain at the top and others, including Brazil, Virginia, California, Tahiti, New Zealand, Botany Bay, Japan, China & Bengal, at hourly intervals around the wheel. France and Spain are added, at +½ & -½ respectively. The upper dial, held in place with the original cord, has the hours in Roman numerals, 'Morning', 'Noon', 'Evening' & 'Midnight' and a central sun motif with a human face. It was published in John Gibson's 'Atlas Minimus, or, A new set of pocket maps of the several empires, kingdoms and states of the known world'.
