Copper engraving, sheet 365 x 320mm (14¼ x 12½"). Trimmed inside platemark; three tears (one lower left, two on right). Very scarce. Time stained.
Double portrait commemorating the heroic efforts of miner Hubert Goffin (1777-1821) and his son. The mine near Liege in Belgium where he worked flooded in February 1812, but he and his son decided to help the miners escape rather than flee themselves. They were trapped inside the mine for five days before they could escape with the seventy surviving miners. For his bravery Goffin was made Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur by Napoleon, with an annual pension of 600 francs.
