Goethe's novel 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' was a favourite subject for print publishers in the late 18th century. The artist and author James Northcote (1746-1831) designed a series of illustrations which were engraved and proved popular. This success spawned continental copies such as this, from a series by/published by Augsburg engraver J.J. Haid.
For an engraving from the original British publication of Northcote's designs, see ref. 26460.
