[George II in profile]Drawn from the Life at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane by Tho. Worlidge Painter, in the Little Piazza Covent Garden, the Corner of James Street where the Painting may be seen, and the Etching sold.
Etching, sheet 165 x 135mm (6½ x 5¼"). Trimmed inside platemark; false margins added; surface loss top right.
Portrait of George II by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66). Various 18th century portraits of George II derive from this image. Born in Peterborough, Worlidge, 'the English Rembrandt', was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. The surface loss in the top right may be a deliberate scratching out to conceal the number '40' added by his widow to correspond with the catalogue number in the posthumous sale of Worlidge's prints in 1767.
O'D 48; W40; D81.
