[George II in profile][1 top right]
Etching on laid paper, sheet 165 x 135mm (6½ x 5¼"). Trimmed inside platemark; false margins added; surface loss top right.
Portrait of George II by Thomas Worlidge (1700-66). Various 18th century portraits of George II derive from this image. Born in Peterborough, Worlidge, 'the English Rembrandt', was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. The surface loss in the top right may be a deliberate scratching out to conceal the number '40' added by his widow to correspond with the catalogue number in the posthumous sale of Worlidge's prints in 1767.
