The excellent Prince Henry, Duc d'York fils de Charles I.er Roy d'Angleterre &c.
Engraving. Sheet 160 x 115mm (6¼ x 4½"). Trimmed within plate, laid on card.
According to the title this is a portrait of Prince Henry Stuart (1640-60), younger brother of Charles II and James II; however it is a reversed version of William Faithorne's portrait of James, even erroneously copying James's title of Duke of York. After the Civil War Henry failed to escape to France with the rest of his family, and Cromwell briefly considered making him a figurehead monarch. Released in 1652 he joined his mother in Paris, then fought with distinction for the Spanish in the Netherlands. On the Restoration in 1660 he returned to England and was made Duke of Gloucester but died of smallpox the same year.
