Six portraits from the 'Third Age of the World', this sheet covering the 11th & 12th centuries, including: Archbishop Thomas Becket (murdered in 1170), Popes Adrian IV (the only English pope, d. 1159) and Alexander III (d. 1181.); Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr, an Arab-Muslim physician & surgeon of Al-Andalus (d. 1162) & Avicenna (Ibn Sina, Persian polymath, d.1037). Published in the famous "Liber Chronicarum" or "Nuremberg Chronicle", the most extensively-illustrated book of the C15th, with 1,809 woodcuts by Michael Wohlgemut & Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and, possibly, a young Albrecht Dürer, who was apprenticed to Wolgemut from 1486-9.
