Engraving with hand-colouring, platemark 175 x 275mm (7 x 10¾"). Paper watermarked 'W. Kingsford 1819'
Scene looking along Venice's Grand Canal with the baroque church of Saint Eustachius (commonly referred to as San Stae) on the right. The view is very similar to that shown in a painting by Bernardo Bellotto sold at auction in 2007 (Christie's New York, sale 1822). In the 18th century paintings by Canaletto, Bellotto and other Venetian painters were often copied in reduced form by British printsellers such as Carington Bowles. Early 19th century restrike of a print first sold in the mid 18th century.
