Nadie se conoce [Nobody knows himself]
[first published 1799, this impression c.1855]
Aquatint with large margins, platemark 220 x 155mm (8½ x 6"). Slight foxing and staining at top.
Etching from Goya's famous series of eighty prints, 'Los Caprichos'. A masquerade showing an encounter between a masked man and woman. For Goya, the masquerade is a metaphor for the constant disimulation and masking of truth everwhere evident. The preparatory drawing for the print is in the Prado, and the copper plate is in the Calcografía Nacional (also in Madrid).
