Engraving. 195mm x 130mm (8" x 5"). Trimmed to platemark.
Narrative scene depicting Massianello (Tommaso Aniello, 1622-1647), leader of a revolt againt the Habsburg rule of Naples in 1647, condeming fellow rebels to death in an attempt to discipline his followers and restrain their destructive behaviour. Massianello and his rebels reacted to increasing taxes placed upon food which made up the diet of the poor. Massianello was eventually murdered by a mob of grain merchants after blaspheming and denouncing his fellow citizens, in what may have been a fit of madness, during mass.
