A portrait of botanist George Lloyd of Brynestyn (1815-43) author of 'Travels in the Himalaya Mountains', shown reclining in arab dress. He accompanied his friend the artist Prisse d'Avennes on his travels through Egypt, dying at Thebes when his rifle accidentaly discharged. While dying he managed to write a letter to his father explaining his death. Published in the 'Oriental Album: Characters, Costumes, and Modes of Life, in the Valley of the Nile' by Achille-Constant-Theodore Emile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-79), a French orientalism who embraced Islam and took the name Edris-Effendi. The book was dedicated to Lloyd.
