Folio, late-19th century full morocco gilt; 15 plates inlaid in Van Gelder Zonen paper, 3 in old colour including one folding. Bookplate of Sir David Lionel Salomons. Fine binding.
A very rare & fine collection of prints relating to Jean-Pierre Blanchard's 28th ballooning ascent, from an area called the Jews Marsh at Nuremberg in 1787. The book was apparently compiled by Sir David Lionel Salomons (1851-1925), nephew and heir of David Salomons (who was elected as Britain's first Jewish MP). A barrister and inventor of electrical gadgets, his home Bromhill (as per bookplate, near Tunbridge Wells) was one of the first homes in the country to be lit by electric light.
