French king Louis XVI, surrounded by commoners 'unis sous le joug', high-ranking officials on the right armed with documents, and a black man kneeling, his head beneath the monarch's foot. The 'traite des negres' is by his side- slavery was not definitively abolished in France until 1848, some years after the publication of this print.
