Raphael Sanctius Urbin.
[Munich: J. Stuntz, c.1830.]
Tinted lithograph. Printed area 460 x 330mm (18 x 13").
Portrait by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483-1520), described here as a self-portrait. In fact, the painting (now in the NGA, Washington), is now believed to depict Bindo Altoviti, a banker and friend of the artist. This print was published in 'Les Oeuvres Lithographiques', a huge series of reproductive plates of paintings in German collections (this painting was in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich in the 19th century, hence its inclusion here), by Johann Nepomuk Strixner (1782 - 1855) and Ferdinand Piloty (1786-1844). Their work did much to popularise lithography, as they showed the technique could achieve all the same effects as other engraving techniques.
