A portrait of journalist and playwright, Edward Topham (1751-1820). On 13 December 1795, a meteorite fell near to Wold Cottage farm, a few miles away from the hamlet of Wold Newton in Yorkshire, England. Edward Topham, who was the Mayor at the time, publicised the find and exhibited the meteorite publically at Picadilly in London. At the time, the Wold Cottage meteorite was the largest observed to fall in Britain, and is the second largest recorded in Europe. A monument was erected on the location of the stone's impact, by Major Topham, on whose property the stone had fallen.
