A portrait of David Hendrik, Baron Chassé (1765 – 1849), standing in a battle field, looking to the right and pointing to the left. In the background is a Dutch flag bearing the personal coat of arms of the monarch of the Netherlands and the motto 'Je Maintiendrai', meaning 'I will maintain'. In 1788 Chassé received a commission as a first lieutenant in the royal French army. After the revolution of 1789 he took part in the campaigns of the revolutionary French armies as a captain. Chassé fought both for and against Napoleon and commanded the Third Netherlands Division that intervened at a crucial moment in the Battle of Waterloo. In 1830 he bombarded the city of Antwerp as commander of its citadel during the Belgian Revolution.
