Engraving. 140 x 123mm. Tip of corner of plate missing top right.
Probably engraved by Jean Berain the Elder [1638 - 1711], Belgian draughtsman, designer, painter and engraver of ornament, one of ten plates of designs for the use of gunsmiths published in 1667. Decorative cartouche designs containing the names of prominent Parisian gun-makers of the day surround an image of a busy gunsmith's workshop. These were probably intended for the gun engaver, who used hand-gravers or die-sinker's chisels to cut designs into the metal surfaces of the gun. Their designs traditionally consisted, as now, of elaborate scroll-work based upon natural forms like Acanthus leaves or vines.
