Portrait of Greek philosopher and cartographer Anthimos Gazis (1758-1828). After studying in Greece, Gazis became rector of the Greek church in Vienna in 1797. There he published a map of Greece and the Balkans. In 1821 Gazis played an important role in the Insurrection of Thessalia during the Greek War of Independence. This portrait was published as a book frontispiece in 1809.
