George Allan (1736-1800), antiquary and topographer, seated with his friend William Hutchinson (1732-1814), topographer and freemason. Allan, who owned a large collection relating to his interest in the history of Darlington, amongst other subjects, encouraged Hutchinson to make use of his collection in his 'History of the County Palatine of Durham' (1785-94). Hutchinson is seen here in the composition of that work, while Allan holds one of the manuscripts from his collection. A genealogical chart lies on the table while on the bookshelfs behind are famous works such as Camden's 'Britannia'. Published as frontispiece to the publisher John Nichols' 'Literary Anecdotes' (1814)- the only engraved portrait of either sitter.
