Plate 1: a bird's eye view of Cirencester House, built on the site of the old abbey; with formal gardens and stables; part of the church and village on the right; Dollar Street in the foreground. From 'Britannia Illustrata'. Abbey House, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, was a country house granted to Richard Master, physician to Queen Elizabeth I in 1564. Between 1774 and 1776 Thomas Master had the house taken down and replaced it with a new one.
