[Netherlands] Jan van Leyen [John of Leiden]Koninck dor Herdoop, wort int Jaer 1525, met geloeyde Tangen van een genepen tot Munster.
Engraving with decorative engraved frame with rats eating books and a dragon breathing fire, printed from separate plate. Total sheet size 300 x 180mm (11¾ x 7"). Trimmed to image.
Portrait of John of Leiden (1509?-1536), Anabaptist leader and King of Munster until its fall in 1536, when he was executed. The portrait in the middle, perhaps based on Aldegrever's engraving, is clearly from the late 16th/early 17th century. The allegorical surround by Gaspar Bouttats was probably designed specifically to fit restrikes of that portrait.
