Abraham Newland (1730-1807), the chief cashier at the Bank of England from 1782 to 1807. No bank note could be issued or could be claimed as genuine without his signature. He slept in the Bank itself for 25 years, so was largely a stranger to his own home adjoining Highbury Fields.
