John Dryden (1631-1700) the acclaimed English poet, literary critic, translator and playwright who made Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as the dominating literary poet of Restoration England. One of a number of stipple heads of Kings and Queens of similar format printed on quarto sheets, by Chapman, published by J. Wilkes, 1795-1810. They appear as illustrations to the 'Encyclopaedia Londinensis, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature ... Embellished by ... engravings.
