Benjamin Stillingfleet (1702-71), botanist, translator and author. He was tutor to William Windham and accompanied him and Rochard Pococke on a trip to Chamonix in 1771, the first recorded travellers for pleasure in the region. Exploring the glaciers, they named the 'Mer de Glace'. As a botanist he was instrumental in popularising the Linnean System in England.
