The Khoikhoi way of catching wild animals; hunters bearing down with clubs and bows and arrows on a lion in the foreground which is mauling a native underneath it; hunters attack three elephants in the centre, two leopards on a rock in the background and a gazelle; a monkey escapes in the right foreground and two lions in the distant background. From "Naaukeurige beschryving van de kaap de Goede Hoop". Peter Kolbe (1675-1726) was sent to South Africa with a mission to provide information about the country and to do astronomical and surveying research. First published in Germany in 1719 as Caput Bonae Spei Hodiernum, the book 'professes to be a complete account of the Cape Colony and its inhabitants'. This is taken from the Dutch edition, published in Amsterdam in two volumes in 1727.
