[Ink mss map of the Great Fish River, Eastern Cape.] Fish River from Richard July 1837.
A sketch map of the Great Fish River in Eastern Cape, South Africa, from the sea at Fort d'Acre north to the Great Fish River Nature Reserve, and north to Beaufort. Large areas to the east are marked 'Kafir Territory'. On the left edge is Grahamstown, which had been described in 1833 as having 'two or three English merchants of considerable wealth, but scarcely any society in the ordinary sense of the word. The Public Library is a wretched affair' (The Museum of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art.). However within two decades it had become Cape Colony's second largest city.
