Here Napoleon was present at the ceremony of opening the dyke of a canal of Cairo, which received water from the Nile. Napoleon spent many of his years interested in canals and in 1798 he discovered the remnants of an ancient waterway. He discovered an ancient canal extending northward from the Red Sea and then westward toward the Nile. Published in A.V. Arnault's 'Vie politique et militaire de Napoléon', Paris, 1822-1826.
