Published by Tho.s McLean 26 Haymarket. [July 9 1829?]
Coloured lithograph. 406 x 286mm (16 x 11¼") Some toning around edges.
O'Connell, tall and bulky, his closed umbrella held against his shoulder, walks between Lawless and Sheil, who folds his arms agressively, looking up at the leader. An attempt by Lawless to hold a monster demonstration in Ballybay was defeated by Orangemen in 1828. Sheil bought a small Kentish freehold in order to address the meeting on Penenden Heath, but could not deliver his speech in face of the hostile crowd; this speech he had sent to the newspapers, where it appeared (25 Oct.). Suggested date from manuscript on British Museum impression.
BM Satires: 15832.
