Shahryar and Shahrzad, the legendary Persian King and Queen from 'One Thoushand and One Nights'. Shahryar was famed for marrying a new virgin every day, and so would send yesterday's wife to be beheaded. Shahrzad wanted to test this, and spent one night telling the king a story, but stopped in the middle as dawn was breaking. The King spared her life for one day to finish the story the next night. This continued day by day, and at the end of one thousand and one nights, and one thousand stories, Shahrzad told the King that she had no more tales to tell him. The King had however fallen in love and had three sons with her. She had made him a wiser and kinder man. Jewish interest. Elyse Ashe Lord (1900-1971), British.
